We Are The Future

About:

For the past three years, Eastern Congo has been a second home to me. It breaks my heart to witness the current social distress gripping the communities I've had the privilege to document. They have become like family to me, and it's imperative that I raise awareness about the ongoing devastation plaguing the region.

A major humanitarian crisis is unfolding due to the prolonged conflict between the Congolese military and rebel groups. Every day, the town of Goma receives a constant influx of refugees. Up to 6 million people have been internally displaced, facing a dire shortage of food, shelter, and global attention. Unfortunately, the situation shows no signs of abating.

From lush, rolling green hills to dramatic, active volcanoes, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is undeniably one of the most breathtaking and intricate places in the world. However, the country is plagued by political and social issues that have taken a toll on the Congolese people. With constant conflicts and an ever-changing climate, locals struggle to survive on a daily basis.\n\n Amidst this backdrop of adversity, on the eastern border of Congo, in the town of Goma, there is a growing community of young boxers who have found both refuge and a sense of home in "The Stadium." In the DRC, opportunities for prosperity are scarce, especially for children without a home. Most are faced with a grim choice between being recruited by one of the rebel armies that inhabit the country's outskirts or joining the country's own military forces. With few alternatives available to them, boxing provides these young individuals with the means to defend themselves, manage their mental health, and cope with their past traumas.
